The Celestica electronics factory in Swords, north of Dublin, is about to close and 250 jobs will be lost.
The Canadian company blamed its decision on the continued downturn in the telecom market.
Debt-laden telephone companies are reducing their investment in new equipment, and the manufacturing of these devices is also moving to cheaper places.
Celestica manufactures printed circuit boards in Dublin.
The company now plans to transfer production to other Celestica factories overseas.
Celestica has hired nearly 1,000 employees in the factory, but has been cutting jobs since 2001.
It has cut Labor here twice and will lose 250 permanent jobs and 70 temporary jobs when it closes.
Workers who were told of the decision today will be paid six weeks a year.
The factory will be closed within three to six months.
Tánaiste and Mary Harney, Minister of Business, Trade and Employment, described unemployment as a shocking blow to the labor force and local communities.
But she said some other companies have been actively recruiting in north Dublin.
She added: \"I am very confident that in a week or so, I will have good news for North Dublin, which will help ease the burden on many people affected by today\'s announcement.
